Research can advance our understanding of the world and potentially improve the lives of billions. However, research doesn’t have to be used for the greater good. In Illuminatus, research is a key tool in your faction’s arsenal. New weapons, advanced technology, social changes, medical developments and more can all help you to control the population, overthrow governments and destroy your rivals. Research is a required goal in many agendas and can be the difference between winning and losing the game. Some Research Cards may only be used once, whilst other persist for a number of turns or until cancelled. Research can also have implications for multiple factions, benefiting one whilst hindering another. For this reason, it could be in your faction’s interests to perform some research which doesn’t directly benefit you. If you suppress your findings, other factions cannot benefit from the research or use it to cause your faction harm. Why do you think it has taken so long for electric cars and longer-lasting lightbulbs to be developed? 54 Research cards are included in the game.
